BARENNESS TO BOUNTIES
Name of the diety:
lord shiva: Mullaivananathar
Ambal: Garbarakshambigai/ Karukatha amman.
Place where the temple is located: Thirukarukavur
Location: The temple is situated on the banks of the river vettar, a branch of river cauvery, in the Papanasam talukof the district of tanjavur at 20 kms east of tanjavur and 20 kms southwest of kumbakonam.
if you are travelling from madurai, trichy, coimbatore, salem etc. then you have to alight at tanjavur bus stand and take a town bus or a route bus to kumbakonam via melattur.
if you are going from Madras, Neyveli, Tiruvarur, mayiladuthurai then alight at kumbakonam bus stop and take a town bus or a route bus to tanjavur via avur and melattur.
Legend: two rishis gowthama and gargeya were doing penance in mullaivanam(later known as tirukarukavur). there lived a couple named 'nidhruva' and 'vedigai' in the same ashram and rendered service to the rishis. the couple had no children and they represented this to the rishis. the rishis told them to worship the dieties in mullaivanam. to their joy vedhigai conceived soon.
during her pregnancy when her husband was away and when she was in deep slumber due to pregnancy there came a rishi called 'urdhvapada' and asked for alms. due to her unconscious state of mind, vedhigai, did not respond. the rishi was enraged at this indifference shown by her and cursed her. this made the loss of foetus from her womb. vedhigai prayed to the goddess in great distress. the goddess appeared and protected the foetus, and preserved it in a pot till it developed in to a full baby and gave it to her.
because of this vedhigai prayed to the goddess that she should stay at this place and bless those women who come to her seeking child. the goddess accepted to this and stayed at this place.
vedhigai did not have breast milk to give the child so the goddess sent Kamadenu the divine cow. kamadenu scratched the earth with her hoof and milk came out in plenty and this formed a milk tank in front of the temple called 'Ksheerakundam'.
MULLAIVANANATHAR:
the linga here is a 'swayambu' and is made of mud.. there is no abhishekam to this lingam. instead it is pasted with 'punuku'. even today we can see the impression of jasmine creepers on the linga.
A ghee is given which has to be consumed for 48 days in the night by both husband and wife except for the days of menstruation. this gives the couple child. there are many examples who i know. and castor oil is given for safe delivery.
so if you are really having a problem this goddess will surely answer to your prayers.

ICE HOCKEY
Ice hockey, referred to simply as hockey in Canada, Sweden and the United States, is a team sport played on ice. It is one of the world's fastest sports, with players on skates capable of going high speeds on natural or artificial ice surfaces. Though played on six continents, ice hockey, as a participatory and as a spectator sport, is most popular in nations in which the climate is sufficiently cold as to permit natural, long-term seasonal ice cover; Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Slovakia, Sweden, Russia, and the United States have dominated international competition, claiming 47 of the 48 gold and silver medals awarded in the men's and women's competitions at the Olympic Winter Games.
Ice hockey is one of the four major North American professional sports, represented at the highest level by the National Hockey League. It is the official national winter sport of Canada, where six of the 30 NHL franchises are based; Canadian-born players, though, outnumber American-born players in the NHL by a factor of three (30 per cent, additionally, come from outside North America).
The sport is played on a hockey rink. During normal play, there are six players, five positional players and one goaltender, per team on the ice at any time, each of whom is on ice skates. The objective of the game is to score goals by shooting a hard vulcanized rubber disc, the puck, into the opponent's goal net, with the goal nets placed at opposite ends of the rink. The players may control the puck using a long stick with a blade that is commonly curved at one end. Players may also generally redirect the puck with any part of their bodies, but the kicking of the puck into the goal is prohibited.

Packing suggestions
some of my suggestions
- start packing as soon as you come to know you will shift.
- if its a local shifting of within 10-15 kms then its easy to pack. you can leave some lose items.
- in case its a long distance then proper care must be taken for packing.
- first pack those which you do not use often.
- separate fragile items from other heavy items.
- use papers to cushion the items in the cardboard box.
- write a list of the items that are in the box in the box itself.
- write the room in which the items are to be kept also on the box.
- try to pack roomwise so that its easy during unpacking.
- clearly mark "fragile" on the cardboard box so that it is handled carefully.
- pack clothes and valuables by yourself before you allow the packers.
- pack the books and important files in a cardboard lined with plastic covers to protect from rain.
- try to take very important files with you do not put in cargo.
- use professional packing tapes normal sealing tapes are not very strong.
- pack shoes in a separate box covering each one with a paper to avoid scratches.
- try to pack all the electronic and heavy ietms an its original cardboard box, as they are strong and will have its packing material.
- pack plastic buckets and other plastic items in gunny bags and mention over the bag as ''plastic or fragile".
i think these are the major things that are to be kept in mind while packing. though it has become easy with packers and movers we should keep a watch of the above mentioned things to make it easy for us during unpacking.

Febrile seizures in children
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, children rarely develop their first febrile seizure before the age of 6 months or after 3 years of age. The older a child is when the first febrile seizure occurs, the less likely that child is to have another.
The precise cause of febrile seizures is not known; however, they are associated with high fevers (over 102 degrees F) and they appear to be related to the rate of rise in temperature more than the actual temperature of the fever. In other words, a child who rapidly develops a fever of 103 degrees seems to be at greater risk of having a seizure than a child who slowly develops a fever of 104 degrees F. Febrile seizures also tend to run in families, causing doctors to believe they may be genetically related.
Many parents worry that if their child has a febrile seizure, he or she will develop epilepsy later in life. However, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, only 2 to 5 percent of children who have febrile seizures go on to develop epilepsy.
Most febrile seizures happen in the first few hours of a child's fever. During a seizure, eyes may roll back in head, body may twitch or jerk, limbs may stiffen, and child may drool and vomit. The seizure may last only a few seconds or up to several minutes. However, if the seizure lasts for more than 10 minutes or if your child starts choking, stops breathing, or turns blue, call doctor immediately.
If your baby is having a seizure, place him/ her on a protected surface, such as the floor, away from any sharp objects. Lay him/ her on his/ her side or stomach to prevent choking if he/she does vomit. As hard as it may be to watch, don't try to hold or restrain your child during the seizure and never place anything in a seizing child's mouth as he could choke on it. After the seizure has subsided he may seem a bit sleepy, but many children return to normal activity immediately.
If your child has a seizure, he should be examined by a doctor to ensure the seizure was caused by the fever and not by another condition (such as meningitis or severe dehydration). You should seek immediate medical attention if he has a stiff neck, is extremely lethargic, or continues to vomit. Doctors will test on your child's blood and urine and may perform a spinal tap to determine the cause of the seizure. A child who has a febrile seizure usually doesn't need to be hospitalized; however, if the seizure is prolonged or is accompanied by a serious infection, or if the source of the infection cannot be determined, the doctor may recommend that the child be hospitalized for observation.
Oral anticonvulsant medications have been proven to reduce the risk of a recurrent febrile seizure when given during illness (Phenobarbital and valproate); however, the side effects of these medications may be significant and many pediatricians are hesitant to prescribe them.
Giving a fever reducer, such as Tylenol or Motrin, at the first sign of a fever is often recommended, but has not been proven to prevent a febrile seizure. The only real way to prevent febrile seizures is to avoid colds and the flu that can cause fever, which is no easy task with young children. Always Prevention is better than Cure.
Lead poisoning in children
According to the National Safe Kids Coalition, an estimated 1.7 million children, age five and under, have lead levels in their blood high enough to affect their intelligence and development. The most common cause of lead poisoning among children is the ingestion of dust from deteriorating lead-based paint. More than 80 percent of publicly- and privately-owned housing units built before 1980 contain some lead-based paint. To limit your child's exposure to lead in the home:
Always have your child wash his hands before meals, snacks, nap time and bedtime.
Keep your child away from chipping, peeling and flaking paint.
Keep the areas where your child plays as dust-free as possible.
Do not allow your child to chew or suck on painted surfaces such as painted window sills, cribs, playpens, or old painted toys.
Wash pacifiers often and pin them on a short ribbon to your child's shirt.
Keep your child's clothes clean by changing them frequently.
When playing inside, place a clean blanket on the floor or carpet for babies to play on. (Always keep the same side up and wash often.)
Wash toys and stuffed animals regularly.

CBSE- a guide to CBSE education system
The Central Board of Secondary Education came into existence with this name in the year 1952 and was reconstituted in 1962 to fulfill the educational needs of those students whose parents were employed in the Central Government and had frequently transferable jobs. The CBSE prepares the syllabus for students from Lower Kindergarten (L.K.G) to Class 12, for schools affiliated with it. It conducts India's two wide board examinations:
The All India Secondary School Examination for Class 10
The All India Senior School Certificate Examination for Class 12.
CBSE All India Senior School Certificate Examination for Class 12 is widely recognized for direct admission to university undergraduate courses.
CBSE also conducts the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) which is a common entrance examination on all-India basis for admission to engineering and architecture/planning programmes in the country.
Similarly Pre-medical and Pre-dental Tests AIPMT (PMT/PDT) are conducted for medical and dental colleges after the 10+2 exams.
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issues datasheet for annual examinations in the last week of December or in the first week of January. All the subjects are mentioned with time of examination along with day and date. The information about the dates of examination in advance helps students to prepare well for examination.
As Central Board of Secondary Education issues date sheet almost 2 months in advance, the students get enough time to prepare their timetable according to the date sheet. Students must prepare a plan of study just after announcement of date sheet. If they are already following Any such plan of study, they must revise it completely. It is advised to observe the gap between two examinations and plan the study timetable accordingly.
good news to parents and students you can see the and read the NCERT text books online by visiting the site http://www.ncert.nic.in/ . this is really useful.
we will see more about education in the future posts.

THE PAMBAN BRIDGE
From the elevated two-lane road bridge, adjoining islands and the parallel rail bridge below can be viewed.
The railway bridge is 6,776 ft and was opened in 1914. The railroad bridge is a still-functioning double-leaf section that can be raised to let ships pass under the bridge.
The railway bridge historically carried meter-gauge trains on it, but Indian Railways upgraded the bridge to carry broad-gauge trains in a project that finished Aug. 12, 2007.
The bridge spans a 2 km-strait between India and Rameswaram island and is the only surface transport link between the two.
The straight, part of the larger Adam's bridge(also known as Rama's Bridge), is famous for the bridge and scenic beauty. The channel was not damaged in the 2004 indian ocean earth quake and tsunami.
A walk on the bridge is an exhilarating experience. A view of the wide Sea and the string of islands on the side of Rameswaram in the midst of strong breeze is breathtaking. Though the bridge is stunning structure the two entrance mandapam and pamban do not do justice to this landmark.
Once you stand on the bridge and watch the Sea it will show how small we all are.

Protect your home from burglary- think like a robber
To determine how secure your home is, think like a robber. From the outside of your home, consider how difficult it would be to break in.
If you locked yourself out, could you easily break in or climb in through an unlocked window?
If you answered yes, then a burglar could answer yes also. Carefully observe any items or objects in your yard that could offer assistance to a would-be thief. Are there any items lying around your home that could actually entice a burglar? A ladder, a screwdriver or hammer left outside could be used to break a window or pry open a window or door. A privacy fence or large trees and shrubs could provide cover for a burglar while he attempts to break in.
Here are a few other things to consider on the outside of your home.
1. Exterior Doors
Take a good look at your exterior doors. Do they appear solid and sturdy? Your exterior doors should be constructed of solid wood or metal for the most protection against break-ins. Try inserting a straight pin into the door, if it goes in without much effort, you have a hollow door that can easily be kicked in by burglars.
Make sure that all doors are kept locked at all times. In addition to your door knob or key lock, you should have a high quality dead bolt lock installed on all entry way doors. Deadbolts can withstand the prying and pounding that regular key locks can't.
If you have glass windows on your doors or next to your doors, consider installing a double cylinder deadbolt. This type of deadbolt requires a key to open it from the outside and the inside.
Not all robberies occur in an unoccupied house, you may also consider a peephole so you can see who is at your door before you open it.
2. Windows
Windows should be closed and locked anytime that you are not in your home or anytime at night. Many burglars, and worse, have easily entered homes through open windows while the home's occupants sleep.
Window pinning is done by inserting a pin or nail above a window so it can't be opened Track fillers are items such as a wooden pole that is placed into the track of the window.
3. Sliding Glass Doors
Sliding glass doors can be the easiest place for a burglar to gain entry into your home. Since these doors provide the easiest opportunities for thieves. To improve the security on your sliding glass doors:
1. Have eyed locking devices that secure the doors to the frame or track installed by a professional locksmith.2. Adjusting the door's track clearances so they can't be pushed or lifted out of their tracks.3. Place a strong metal or wooden bar, such as a metal pipe or broomstick handle, inside the track to prevent the doors from being opened.4. Install locking hinges that slide over the tracks to prevent the door from being forced open.
Some of the newer styles of sliding glass doors have built in locking systems. If your doors do not have these locks, you may want to consult with a professional about having them replaced with the more secure models.
4. Outdoor Lighting
Lighting, both inside and outside of your home, is one of the best and most economical deterrents for burglars. Indoor lighting gives the impression that a home is occupied while outdoor lighting diminishes places to hide.
You should have lights placed near porches, outside of all doorways, garage doors and all other points of entry. Keep any entryways well lit. Statistics have shown that a burglar is less likely to attempt to enter a well-lit residence.
Floodlights are good choices for providing bright light. Motion detecting lights are also good choices for home security. These lights turn on automatically whenever motion is detected nearby. The sudden flash of bright lights can be very effective in scaring away a would-be burglar.
For added security, place some lights out of reach so that the bulbs can't be removed or easily broken. Install flood lights or motion lights on each corner of your house's roof for added light and security. Aim the lights away from the house so that your yard is illuminated, allowing you to see anyone that approaches.
Burglar Alarms
Burglar Alarm Systems may offer an advantage to you if you live in an isolated area or if you spend more time away from your home. Also, if you live in a high crime area or keep valuable items in your home, you may want to consider installing a security system.
There are a variety of burglar alarms and security systems available. To determine which level of security best suits your need, compare the services of several companies. If you have an alarm system installed in your home make sure all household members are properly trained at using it. A top notch security system is worthless if it isn't used...or if it is used improperly.
Security When You're Away From Home
Burglars have an opportune time to rob your house while you are away from home on business or vacation. Make sure your home looks as if someone is living in it at all times. If possible, ask a trusted friend, neighbor or family member to stay in your home while you are away. Otherwise, arrange for them to visit your house each day to pick up the mail, any newspapers, deliveries, and turn on lights.
If you will be away for a long period of time, consider using light timers that will automatically turn lights off and on at specific times. Have the post office and the newspapers stop your deliveries while you are away. A pile of old newspapers in the driveway are a sure sign that no one is home.
I think this would be very helpful almost everybody having an independent house. Some of these are from my own experience. So dont be a victim to a burglar next time.
